University of Ibadan students took to the streets on Wednesday 17th, July 2024 to protest against the recent tuition fee hike and power supply rationing. The protesters, who wore masks to hide their identities, gathered at the main entrance to the school and the Senate Building, demanding a reversal of the new electricity rationing policy and a total reversal of the school fee hike.
The students claimed that the fees are unaffordable, with some students contemplating quitting their studies due to the hike. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that A 200-level Political Science student said, “The present school fees are too much for us; we can’t afford it. We need an education subsidy.” Another student added, “There is so much anger among the students, but this is a peaceful protest to call on the federal government and the school management to reconsider their stand on the tuition fees.”
The students also expressed frustration over the poor living conditions on campus, including inadequate water and electricity supply. They alleged that the university management has failed to address these issues, despite repeated promises. According to a memo signed by the Chief Engineer yesterday, the students will be subjected to a 10-hour daily electricity rationing schedule, from 8am-2pm and 10pm-2am.
The students are unhappy with this arrangement, saying it will disrupt their academic activities and cause them further hardship. They are demanding a complete reversal of the rationing policy and a commitment from the management to address the underlying issues. The protest is ongoing, with students vowing to continue until their demands are met.
