The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) has introduced a mandatory annual maintenance fee of N200,000 for doctors seeking accommodation at the House Officers’ Quarters. This non-negotiable fee must be paid to the hospital’s Estate Unit, and any failure to comply with the established process renders the occupant’s stay unauthorised, according to a statement issued by the management on 14 October 2024.

Doctors must first obtain approval before making the payment, with the approval valid for only 24 hours. Once the payment is made and proof is submitted to the Estate Unit, they receive an allocation letter, granting them legal rights to occupy their designated room. Strict compliance with this procedure is enforced by the hospital, with unauthorised occupants being treated as illegal tenants.

The Estate Unit is also responsible for overseeing tenant activities within the quarters, including the right to evict occupants involved in illegal activities. The hospital has stationed staff within the quarters to ensure adherence to the rules and supervision of the facility.

At the end of the 12-month tenancy, doctors are required to vacate their apartments and hand over the keys. Failure to do so may result in consequences from the management, as outlined in the hospital’s official statement.
