The management of the University of Ibadan (UI) has announced a three-week break following student protests over a recent hike in tuition fees.
This decision was detailed in a circular issued by the university’s management after a meeting with the leadership of the Students’ Union on Friday. According to the circular, the break is intended to provide students with sufficient time to pay their fees and complete the required online registration processes.
As a result of the break, the first-semester examinations, initially set to commence on September 2, have been rescheduled to start on September 23. The management emphasized that the portal for fee payment and course registration will close definitively on September 20, 2024, and will not be reopened afterward.
The move comes amid growing tension on campus, as students voiced their concerns over the increased fees and demanded more time to comply with the new payment structure. The university administration hopes the extended break will help ease the situation and allow for a smoother registration process.
