**Truck Accident Claims Life of Revenue Collector on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Driver Flees Scene**
A revenue collector tragically lost his life on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after being struck by a containerized truck (registration number FST 887 XD) near New Garage inbound Lagos. The incident occurred while the deceased was on duty, attempting to collect dues from the truck driver.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). According to the statement, the revenue collector succumbed instantly to the impact while crossing the expressway.
LASTMA personnel promptly arrived at the scene to manage the situation. The victim’s remains were handed over to officers from the Adigboluje Police Division, who are coordinating with the family for necessary arrangements. The victim’s wife rushed to the scene upon hearing the tragic news.
The driver of the truck fled immediately after the incident, avoiding accountability. The vehicle, which caused significant traffic congestion, was cleared by LASTMA officers and handed over to the police for further investigation.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended his condolences to the bereaved family and expressed regret over the tragic event. He also urged transport union leaders to educate their members on adopting safer revenue collection methods, particularly on busy highways, to prevent such incidents in the future.
“This tragic event underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures during revenue collection, especially in high-risk areas like expressways,” Mr. Bakare-Oki stated.
LASTMA conveyed heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family during this difficult time and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safer traffic management and practices across the state.
