TikTok has removed 2.1 million videos from Nigeria as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance content moderation and ensure a safer user experience. The removal, covering violations of the platform’s community guidelines during the second quarter of 2024, was highlighted in the company’s Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, released on Tuesday.
According to the report, the removed content represents less than 1% of total uploads in Nigeria during the period. Impressively, 99.1% of these videos were taken down proactively—before any user reports were made—while 90.7% were removed within 24 hours of posting. These figures underscore TikTok’s dedication to addressing harmful content swiftly and efficiently, particularly for its Nigerian audience.
TikTok reaffirmed its commitment to investing in advanced content moderation technologies and recognizing potential risks. The platform emphasized its focus on transparency and safety for users in Nigeria and across the globe.
The removal of content was not limited to Nigeria alone; TikTok globally took down over 178 million videos in June 2024, with 144 million of these removals conducted through automated systems. The platform’s global proactive detection rate now stands at 98.2%, further reinforcing TikTok’s efforts to curtail the spread of harmful content.
TikTok, owned by the global technology company ByteDance, remains focused on creating a safe digital space for its diverse global community.
