Sierra Leone Government Signs Landmark MoU with IITA to Advance Agricultural Development in Africa

The Government of Sierra Leone has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) to strengthen collaboration on agricultural development across the African continent. This strategic partnership aims to enhance agricultural productivity, promote food security, and support innovation-driven farming practices.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State expressed appreciation to President Julius Maada Bio for his commitment to advancing agriculture in Africa. He described the partnership as a significant step toward sustainable agricultural growth and reiterated Oyo State’s readiness to support initiatives that drive food production, agribusiness, and rural development. Highlighting Oyo’s status as an agrarian state, he emphasized that the government remains committed to policies that encourage farmer empowerment and increased agricultural output.

During a press briefing, the Director General of IITA, Dr. Simeon Ehui, reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s long-standing collaboration with the institute. He noted that the partnership has been instrumental in boosting agricultural research, improving farming techniques, and ensuring food security across Africa. He further stressed the need for continued investment in agricultural science and innovation, stating that with the right support, Africa can achieve self-sufficiency in food production and reduce dependency on imports.
This agreement marks a significant milestone in agricultural transformation, paving the way for enhanced research, technology transfer, and farmer-centered initiatives that will drive economic growth and food sustainability across the continent.
