Despite a total of 52,423 candidates applying for the 7,000 teaching positions offered in public primary schools by the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), over 45,000 candidates took the Computer-Based Test (CBT). Unfortunately, 43,000 of those applicants failed to pass the test.
The Board recently announced the results of the CBT for teaching jobs, which were held in Ibadan. Out of the 52,000 applicants, only 9,000 managed to pass the test, highlighting a significant gap in the candidates’ performance.
In an interview with DparrotNews, Mr. Aderemi Aduroja emphasized the urgent need for the government to provide Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities to train teachers. He noted that such training would enable teachers to, in turn, educate their students effectively in today’s digital age. Mrs. Beauty Akolade echoed this sentiment, pointing out that many of the teachers who failed the test lack computer literacy because ICT was not part of their education during their formative years.
The widespread failure in the CBT has led to calls for the government to invest more heavily in the education sector, particularly in training programs for teachers. The idea is to adopt a “train-the-trainers” approach, ensuring that teachers are well-equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to pass these tests and to impart quality education to their students.
Additionally, stakeholders have urged the government to conduct a thorough review of the country’s education system to identify and implement necessary reforms. This proactive approach is seen as essential to prevent such large-scale failures in the future and to ensure that the education sector meets contemporary standards.
Investing in education, particularly in ICT training for teachers, is viewed as a critical step in addressing the deficiencies highlighted by the recent CBT results. By doing so, the government can enhance the overall quality of education in Oyo State, ensuring that both teachers and students are better prepared for the demands of the modern world.
