A distressing video circulating widely depicts severe flooding at the University of Ibadan’s Awo Hostel, caused by heavy rainfall in the city. The floodwaters inundated several student accommodations, resulting in significant damage to personal belongings including food supplies, documents, and electronic devices.
According to a source within the university, the worst-hit area is the Awo Hostel, where approximately 16 rooms on the lower floors were completely submerged, with students’ possessions seen floating in the water. This incident marks the third occurrence of flooding on campus, but the first time such extensive damage has been reported.
One affected student shared, “This is the first time our rooms have been flooded to this extent.” They continued, “Many students lost food supplies, documents, and personal belongings, particularly those away for exams when the flooding occurred.”
Distressing footage obtained captures students struggling to salvage their belongings amidst flooded rooms, where personal items are visibly floating. The floodwaters have infiltrated dormitories, bathrooms, kitchens, and all access points to the hostel.
In a poignant account, a female student lamented the loss of everything in her room, including items stored in her cupboard and on her bed. She expressed difficulty in procuring basic necessities following the incident.
The University of Ibadan administration is yet to release an official statement regarding the extent of the damage or plans for recovery efforts.
