The House Committee on Sports has proposed that the budget for preparing Nigerian athletes for the Olympic Games be included in the annual budget of the Sports Ministry.
The Chairman of the committee, Honourable Ekene Adams, along with other committee members, proposed sponsoring a bill to specify where funds should be allocated in the Sports Ministry’s annual budget. These funds would then be distributed to different sports federations to enhance the preparations of Nigerian athletes.
When asked about the readiness of Nigerian athletes and their chances of winning medals at the Olympic Games in France, the President of the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC), Engineer Habu Gumel, stated that competing favorably with the best athletes in the world and winning medals requires a four-year program. He highlighted the lack of funds as a major reason why some Nigerian athletes struggle to compete effectively in international championships.
