The Department of State Services (DSS) has strongly refuted reports claiming that its operatives raided the headquarters of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja. The alleged incident has sparked controversy and conflicting accounts from both parties involved.

According to Benson Upah, Head of Media and Public Relations at the NLC, the incident occurred around 8:30 pm on Wednesday. Upah reported that a team of individuals identifying themselves as DSS operatives forcibly entered the Labour House in Abuja. The invading team claimed they were conducting a search for seditious materials allegedly used during the #EndBadGovernance protests. Upah expressed the NLC’s alarm and concern over the incident, describing it as an unwarranted and intimidating action against the union.

Refuting these claims, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya categorically denied any involvement of the agency in the alleged raid. Afunanya emphasized that the DSS operates within the confines of the law and respects the rights of all citizens and organizations. He urged the public to disregard the reports, labeling them as misinformation designed to tarnish the agency’s reputation. “The DSS has no hand in the alleged raid on the NLC headquarters. We maintain our commitment to lawful operations and respect for human rights,” Afunanya stated.

The conflicting accounts have led to heightened tensions, with the NLC calling for a thorough investigation into the incident. The NLC has urged the government and relevant authorities to ensure the protection of its members and premises. “We demand an immediate and transparent investigation into this incident to hold accountable those responsible for this unlawful action,” Upah said.

In response to the situation, various civil society organizations and labor unions have expressed solidarity with the NLC, condemning any attempts to intimidate or undermine the union’s activities. They have called on the government to safeguard the rights of labor unions and uphold democratic principles.

As the situation unfolds, the public awaits further clarification and resolution. The NLC has indicated its readiness to pursue all legal avenues to protect its rights and ensure justice is served.
