In a move aimed at tackling fraud and promoting accountability in the civil service, President Bola Tinubu has directed that all civil servants who have relocated abroad but are still drawing salaries from the government must refund the money.
The president gave the directive at the Award and Gala Night of the 2024 Civil Service Week in Abuja, following a shocking revelation by the Head of Service about hundreds of workers who had relocated abroad without formally resigning their appointments and were still drawing salaries from the treasury for years.
President Tinubu emphasized that the heads and supervisors of the departments of such workers must also be sanctioned for aiding and abetting the fraud under their watch.
This directive is seen as a significant step towards ending the practice of “ghost workers” in the civil service, where individuals continue to receive salaries without performing their duties.
The president’s move is expected to save the government millions of naira in revenue and promote a culture of transparency and accountability in the public service.
