In a landmark move aimed at enhancing efficiency and reliability in Nigeria’s power sector, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has embarked on a comprehensive restructuring of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). This transformation introduces the creation of the Nigerian Independent System Operator Limited (NISO), marking a significant milestone in the nation’s energy landscape.
The announcement, made today in Abuja, underscores NERC’s commitment to driving substantive changes within the industry. Signed by Chairman Mr. Sanusi Garba and Vice Chairman Mr. Muslim Oseni, the order signifies a strategic shift towards optimizing operational frameworks.
This strategic initiative follows extensive consultations spanning almost four years, during which stakeholders collaborated on the unbundling of TCN into distinct entities. Now, with the establishment of NISO, the division of responsibilities is set to streamline market operations and system management.
Under the new structure, all market and system operation functions will transition from TCN to NISO, heralding a new era of specialization and responsiveness in Nigeria’s power transmission network. This evolution promises to foster a more resilient and agile energy ecosystem, empowering both industry players and consumers alike.”
