The Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State has officially commenced crude oil processing, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s drive toward energy self-sufficiency. This announcement was made by Femi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
Soneye described the development as a “monumental achievement” and congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the NNPC Board, and Group CEO Mele Kyari for their dedication to reviving the refinery. He emphasized that this milestone ushers in a “new era of energy independence and economic growth” for Nigeria.
In addition to crude processing, Soneye confirmed that truck loading operations would begin immediately. He also stated that efforts are underway to restore operations at the Warri Refinery soon, signaling the NNPCL’s broader commitment to revitalizing Nigeria’s downstream oil sector.
This progress ends a history of missed deadlines for the refinery, which has undergone extensive rehabilitation after years of dormancy. The resumption of operations is expected to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products and improve the local availability of refined fuels.
