The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has affirmed that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery is fully operational, with loading activities actively underway.
This confirmation was made by the Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mele Kyari, during the commissioning of the NUPENG Towers in Lagos on Wednesday. The statement was included in a press release signed by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, and shared via NNPC Ltd.’s official X account on December 4, 2024.
In his remarks at the event, Mr. Kyari invited human rights lawyer and activist Mr. Femi Falana, along with other skeptics, to join NNPC Ltd. on an inspection tour of the refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna to verify their operational status.
Addressing concerns about product blending, Mr. Kyari clarified that blending is an essential component of refining, ensuring products meet the specifications required in various markets.
“If you don’t blend, you will produce off-spec products that can damage vehicles. Every refinery blends because what is on specification in the United States might be off-spec in Nigeria or elsewhere. Blending aligns products with the specifications of different countries or regions,” he explained.
Mr. Kyari also commended NUPENG on the completion of the NUPENG Towers and encouraged the union to maintain a spirit of dialogue and cooperation in its engagements with NNPC Ltd. and the Federal Government.
He further noted that the President’s interventions in the oil and gas sector, including Executive Orders, are driving positive outcomes such as increased investments and the potential for job creation in the industry.
