The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has condemned the growing trend of individuals directing curses and abusive language at others online, stressing that such actions amount to cyberbullying, which is a punishable offence under the law.
In a post on X.com earlier today, Adejobi highlighted that targeting individuals with harsh and offensive language on social media platforms exceeds the boundaries of freedom of expression or constructive criticism. He clarified that cyberbullying involves intentional acts of harassment or abuse in digital spaces, distinguishing it from defamation, which relates more to spreading false information.
Adejobi further emphasized that cyberbullying is a criminal act punishable by law, noting that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to addressing these behaviors to maintain decorum and respect within digital communities. He called on members of the public to desist from engaging in online harassment and reminded them of the need to use social media responsibly.
The Police PRO also encouraged victims of cyberbullying to report such incidents to the relevant authorities, assuring them that the police will take appropriate actions to address and curb the menace. He reiterated that protecting the dignity and rights of individuals, both offline and online, remains a priority for law enforcement agencies in Nigeria.
