The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the approval and release of a list of 10,000 successful applicants for recruitment into the constable and specialist cadres of the Nigeria Police Force. The PSC emphasized fairness and justice in the recruitment process, working with guidance from relevant stakeholders, including the Nigeria Police Force, the National Assembly, and the Federal Character Commission, to ensure equitable distribution of successful candidates across the 774 local government areas of the country.

PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani disclosed this development in a statement on Tuesday, stating, “The Police Service Commission has approved and released the list of 10,000 successful applicants for recruitment into the constable cadre of the Nigeria Police Force. The commission received the report of the Police Recruitment Board today, June 4, 2024. Of the approved applicants, 9,000 were for General Duty, while 1,000 were recruited for the Specialists cadre.”

To ensure fairness, the Commission collaborated with stakeholders including the NPF, the National Assembly, and the Federal Character Commission. A Recruitment Board was inaugurated, comprising representatives from the PSC, NPF, Ministry of Police Affairs, Federal Character Commission, Police Colleges, and the Police Trust Fund, to oversee the recruitment process.

Interested Nigerian youths were invited to apply online from October 15 to November 26, 2023, in line with Federal Character requirements. A total of 609,886 applications were received, and 416,323 applicants who met the advertised requirements were shortlisted for physical and document screening, held from January 8 to January 29, 2024, in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

After the physical and credentials screening, 171,956 applicants were shortlisted for the Computer Based Tests (CBT) conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Ani noted that “15,447 General Duty applicants who performed well in the CBT were further invited for medical screening, while 55,645 Specialists underwent practical tests and medical screening. Each stage of the recruitment process was carried out with a high level of scrutiny and care.”

In total, 10,000 applicants were recommended for final selection—9,000 for General Duty and 1,000 for Specialists, selected based on the Nigeria Police Force’s needs and ensuring geographical representation.

PSC Chairman Dr. Solomon Arase, retired Inspector General of Police, stated that the rigorous recruitment process aimed to enhance the capacity and effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force and promote community-rooted, service-oriented policing. He expressed optimism about the future of the nation’s security, emphasizing the importance of integrity, transparency, and excellence.

The final selection process was meticulously structured to ensure fairness and inclusivity, with 10 candidates selected from each of the 774 local government areas, following the National Assembly’s decision on February 29, 2024, to create a diverse Police Force. The list of successful candidates will be presented to the public in compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023 to ensure confidentiality and protect recruits’ personal data.
