Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has filed a ₦5 billion lawsuit against Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy. Obi’s legal team, led by Chief Alex Ejesieme, is demanding a retraction and public apology for Onanuga’s claims linking Obi to an impending mass protest.
Onanuga’s July 20, 2024, social media post alleged that Obi’s supporters were planning mayhem in Nigeria and that Obi should be held responsible for any anarchy. Obi’s counsel argues that this statement has damaged his reputation, depicting him as someone who condones violence despite his history of non-violence.
The demands include:
– Retraction and public apology in four national dailies (Vanguard, THISDAY, Punch, and The Cable)
– Public apology on Onanuga’s verified X account
– ₦5 billion in damages for embarrassment caused to Obi and his family
If Onanuga fails to meet these demands within 72 hours, Obi’s legal team will pursue defamation and libel charges in court.
