MultiChoice Nigeria has announced its intention to appeal the ruling of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal in Abuja, which imposed a N150 million fine on the company for challenging the tribunal’s jurisdiction. The fine was imposed after MultiChoice was found to have disobeyed an earlier tribunal order.
The initial order, which MultiChoice is accused of violating, restrained the pay-TV company from increasing its monthly subscription rates pending the outcome of a suit filed by Festus Onifade, an Abuja-based lawyer. Onifade had taken legal action to contest the proposed price hike by the company.
In addition to the financial penalty, the tribunal also directed MultiChoice Nigeria to offer its DStv and GOtv customers in Nigeria one month of free subscription. This ruling aims to compensate subscribers who might have been affected by the company’s disregard for the tribunal’s order.
MultiChoice Nigeria has expressed its dissatisfaction with the tribunal’s ruling and confirmed its plans to challenge the decision in a higher court. The company’s legal team is preparing to file an appeal, aiming to overturn the judgment and contest the grounds on which the fine was based.
