The #EndSARS protests that swept across Lagos State and other parts of Nigeria in 2020 saw thousands of youths taking to the streets to demand the abolition of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) due to its alleged abuses. During these demonstrations, numerous protesters were arrested and have since faced prolonged detention.
In a recent development, a Lagos State Magistrate Court has ordered the release of six men who were arrested during the #EndSARS protests. These individuals had spent almost four years in prison following their arrest on October 20, 2020.
While the court’s decision has brought relief to the families of the six men, the judgment has sparked controversy. Some residents of Ibadan have expressed their discontent, criticizing the court for releasing only six out of the many protesters still languishing in custody. They argue that all those detained during the protests should be freed, emphasizing the injustice of prolonged detention without trial.
Additionally, there is a growing call for the government to not only release the remaining detainees but also to compensate them for the time lost during their imprisonment. Many believe that these individuals have suffered unjustly and that the government should take responsibility for the hardships they have endured.
