The Three-Wheeler Riders Association, a branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Oyo State, has called on the Oyo State Government to intervene in what they describe as unfair treatment by the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Agency (OYRTMA).

Members of the association from the Mokola-Gate and Iwo Road branches staged a peaceful protest, urging the state government to regulate and oversee the activities of OYRTMA officials, particularly at their Mokola park, which they claim has become a hotspot for harassment and financial exploitation.

As part of their protest, the association visited several radio stations across the state to voice their grievances. Speaking on behalf of the group, Mr. Olamilekan Akanni accused OYRTMA officials of illegal arrests and extortion, which he said are severely affecting their livelihoods. “We are just trying to make an honest living, but the harassment and financial demands from OYRTMA officials are becoming unbearable,” he said.

Another member, Mr. Olalekan Ogungbade, echoed these sentiments, appealing to the government for protection. “The economic hardship in the country has forced many of us into becoming Three-Wheeler riders to fend for our families. We are not criminals, yet we are being treated unfairly,” he lamented.

In response to the allegations, the General Manager of OYRTMA, Mr. Adeoye Ayoade, addressed the situation, explaining that the agency’s primary mandate is to ensure that roads in Oyo State are safe and accessible for all road users. He urged motorists, including members of the association, to comply with traffic regulations to avoid conflicts. “Our goal is not to harass or exploit anyone but to ensure orderliness and safety on our roads,” he stated.

The protest has brought to light the tension between OYRTMA officials and Three-Wheeler riders, with many now looking to the state government for decisive action to resolve the matter and restore peace on the roads.
