In light of the recent Ibadan funfair tragedy that claimed the lives of 35 children, the Oyo State Government has issued a stern warning to event planners, corporate bodies, and individuals organizing Valentine’s Day celebrations to adhere strictly to state rules and regulations.

According to Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information, several broadcast stations have been promoting Valentine’s Day events at various venues, prompting the need for caution. In a statement released on January 28, 2025, Oyelade emphasized the importance of involving security agencies, such as the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, to ensure seamless and secure gatherings.

Key requirements for event planners include active involvement of security agencies to ensure proper logistics and security measures, consensus between planners, security, and medical personnel on venue choices, involvement of the Oyo State Ministry of Health and Hospitals Management Board to ensure adequate medical support, and private hospitals may be involved where necessary.

The Commissioner warned that failure to comply with these directives will result in severe consequences, as the state is still grappling with the aftermath of the Ibadan funfair tragedy.
