The Oyo State government has introduced a series of measures aimed at preventing a cholera outbreak in public basic schools. This proactive approach was announced by the Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, during a press briefing in Ibadan.

Dr. Adeniran emphasized the importance of maintaining high hygiene standards among food handlers in schools. He directed head teachers to strictly monitor food vendors and ensure they adhere to rigorous cleanliness practices to avoid contamination and the spread of cholera. “The health and safety of our students is our top priority,” said Adeniran. “We must take every possible step to prevent any health crisis in our schools.”

The Oyo State government, through SUBEB, is working diligently to implement these health protocols. In addition to hygiene checks, the Board is conducting regular inspections of school facilities to ensure that water sources, kitchens, and dining areas meet health standards. These inspections aim to identify and rectify any potential hygiene issues before they can lead to an outbreak.

Dr. Adeniran also called on parents, guardians, and school authorities to collaborate in this health initiative. He urged them to educate students on the importance of personal hygiene, such as regular hand washing and safe food practices. “Preventing cholera is a collective effort,” he stated. “Parents and guardians should ensure their children understand the significance of hygiene and follow safety guidelines both at home and in school.”

In addition, the government has launched a public health campaign to raise awareness about cholera prevention. This includes distributing informational materials to schools and communities, and organizing workshops for teachers and food handlers on proper hygiene practices.

These measures come in response to recent cholera outbreaks in various parts of Nigeria, prompting the Oyo State government to take preemptive action to safeguard its students. The government’s commitment to public health in schools reflects its broader goal of ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for all students in the state.
