The Oyo State Government, in partnership with the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), has organized a quiz competition for secondary school students in the state, aimed at educating them on legislative processes and democratic principles.

Speaking at the event, held at Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Salihu Adelabu, highlighted the importance of the quiz in sensitizing students to the tenets of democracy and the legislative system. Represented by the Deputy Director of Secondary Education, Mrs. Gladys Nton, the Commissioner explained that the competition serves as a platform to introduce future leaders to the fundamental workings of the legislature in democratic governance.

Prof. Adelabu praised the initiative, expressing confidence that it would greatly benefit students across the state by deepening their understanding of the history, roles, and functions of the Nigerian legislature.

In his remarks, the Director General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, represented by Prof. Shola Omotola, stated that the quiz competition is part of the institute’s ongoing efforts to promote civic education and broaden students’ knowledge of legislative processes and democratic governance. He thanked the Oyo State Government and the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology for their support in making the event a success.

Mr. Tayo Stephen, the state representative of the program, explained that this year’s edition marks the 9th edition of the competition, which is designed to familiarize students with the rudiments of legislative governance and prepare them for future leadership roles. He announced that the winning school would advance to the zonal level to compete with other states in the Southwest, with the final competition scheduled to take place in Abuja on October 31, 2024.

At the end of the competition, **Abadina College Senior, University of Ibadan (UI)**, emerged as the winner and will now represent Oyo State at the zonal level. **Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan** secured second place, while **Olivet Heights School, Oyo** took third position.

The event was concluded with a call for the winning school to intensify their preparation for the next stage of the competition.
