The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) hosted its Southwest National Secondary Schools Quiz Competition on Thursday in Oyo State, with champions from across the region gathering for the final round held at Lagelu Grammar School, Oremeji, Ibadan. The competition focused on themes of the Legislature and Democracy.
In his keynote address, Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Salihu Adelabu, emphasized the quiz competition’s role in enhancing students’ understanding of democratic principles and equipping them with essential leadership skills. Prof. Adelabu, represented by the Director of Secondary Schools, Mr. Akanji Olayinka, underscored the Ministry’s commitment to fostering civic education and expressed appreciation for the students’ dedication and resilience. The commissioner also affirmed Oyo State’s support for similar initiatives to enhance students’ political awareness.
Representing NILDS Director General Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, Supervising Director Dr. Asimiyu Abiola highlighted the competition’s broader goal of educating young people about the history, practices, and procedures of the Legislature. He encouraged participants to embrace the results of the competition with sportsmanship, aligning with NILDS’s mission to nurture future leaders.
At the end of the competition, Vetland Senior Grammar School from Ifako, Lagos State, claimed first place, with Abadina College Senior Secondary School, University of Ibadan, representing Oyo State, securing second place, and Model Secondary School from Akure, Ondo State, taking third. As the regional champions, Lagos State will represent the Southwest at the upcoming national competition.
