Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has approved a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for state workers, effective December 1, 2024. The announcement came on Tuesday, November 19, after the state government and leaders of organized labour formally signed the wage agreement following extensive negotiations.
The move underscores the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers in Ekiti State amidst rising economic challenges. The agreement reflects a collaborative effort between the state government and labour unions to address the financial needs of civil servants while maintaining fiscal sustainability.
The new minimum wage will apply across all categories of state employees, including junior, senior, and pensionable staff. It is designed to align workers’ earnings with current economic realities and enhance their purchasing power.
Governor Oyebanji commended the dedication of the wage negotiation committee, which included representatives from both the government and labour unions, for their diligent efforts in reaching an amicable resolution.
Labour leaders expressed gratitude to the governor for his responsiveness to workers’ concerns and for prioritizing their welfare. Speaking on behalf of the organized labour unions, the Ekiti State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kayode Fatomilola, described the approval as a historic milestone in labour-government relations within the state.
“We appreciate the government’s efforts in ensuring that workers are treated fairly despite the economic constraints. This agreement signifies a commitment to fostering a productive and motivated workforce,” Fatomilola said.
The ₦70,000 minimum wage will take effect from December 1, 2024, with the government assuring workers of prompt implementation. Governor Oyebanji emphasized that the increase is part of a broader strategy to improve working conditions and bolster morale among public servants.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to pursuing policies that promote social equity and economic stability, adding that Ekiti State remains dedicated to setting a benchmark in good governance and worker-friendly policies.
This development places Ekiti State among the few in Nigeria to increase the minimum wage above the federally recommended ₦30,000, setting a precedent for other states to follow.
