The Ajeniju of Halleluyah Community, Oba Yusuf Jelili Olaiya, in Egbedore Local Government Area of Osun State, was reportedly attacked and severely beaten on Friday following a disagreement over a Jummah service.

Sources revealed that the confrontation stemmed from the installation of Hammed Tijani as the Chief Imam of the Halleluyah community, a move which allegedly angered some youths from the neighboring Ido-Osun community. The Ido-Osun youths reportedly claimed the Halleluyah community land and objected to the appointment of the Chief Imam without their consent.

The altercation escalated during the inaugural Jummah service officiated by the newly installed Imam. It was during this service that the protesting youths allegedly attacked Oba Olaiya, leaving him with severe injuries. The monarch was subsequently rushed to a government-owned hospital in Osogbo for urgent medical attention.

The dispute between the Halleluyah and Ido-Osun communities is said to center on land ownership and territorial rights. Sources suggest that the disagreement had been simmering for some time, but tensions heightened when the monarch proceeded with the installation of a Chief Imam without consulting leaders of the Ido-Osun community.

This unilateral action reportedly exacerbated the rift, prompting the violent response from some Ido-Osun youths during the religious service.

Residents of the Halleluyah community have expressed outrage over the attack on their monarch, describing it as a desecration of traditional and religious institutions.

In a statement, a community leader who preferred anonymity said, “It is unacceptable for anyone to attack a monarch or disrupt religious activities in the name of protest. This matter should have been resolved amicably through dialogue rather than resorting to violence.”

Meanwhile, some members of the Ido-Osun community defended the actions of the youths, claiming that their community’s rights and customs were disregarded by the monarch’s actions.

The Osun State Police Command has reportedly launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities have assured the public that those responsible for the attack will be brought to justice.

Speaking on the matter, a police spokesperson said, “We are aware of the incident, and our officers are working diligently to apprehend those involved in the violence. Acts of lawlessness, particularly against traditional rulers, will not be tolerated.”

Reports from the hospital indicate that Oba Yusuf Jelili Olaiya is in stable condition but remains under medical observation due to the severity of his injuries. His family and supporters have called for calm while urging the authorities to resolve the matter and ensure the safety of the monarch.

Community leaders and stakeholders in Egbedore Local Government Area have urged the feuding communities to prioritize peace and resolve their differences amicably.

A traditional ruler from a neighboring community stated, “This incident highlights the need for mutual respect and dialogue between communities. Violence does not solve disputes but only deepens divisions.”

As investigations continue, both communities await resolutions that will prevent further hostilities and restore harmony to the area.
