The increasing rate of noise pollution in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, requires immediate intervention to prevent potential religious crises, community violence, and other social vices. Despite the late Ajimobi-led administration enacting a law against noise pollution, the current administration under Governor Seyi Makinde has shown a lack of political will to enforce this law, resulting in widespread impunity.
Noise pollution has numerous negative impacts on human health, including annoyance and aggression, hypertension, high stress levels, hearing loss, sleep disturbances, loss of concentration, and panic attacks. Additionally, it can facilitate security breaches, as criminals exploit the cover of noise to commit crimes undetected, making it difficult for victims to receive help.
Although the late Ajimobi administration passed a bill in the Oyo State House of Assembly addressing noise pollution, its lack of implementation has led to a disregard for maintaining societal decorum.
In an interview with DparrotNews, local residents shared their views on the effects of noise pollution and potential solutions. Mr. Usman Rauf suggested that clubs, churches, and other noise-generating establishments should be located far from residential areas. Miss Damilola Grace recommended that religious institutions reduce night activities or that the government should ban night worship altogether.
There is a call for the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), along with state and local government environmental protection agencies, to strengthen their efforts. Partnering with the National Orientation Agency and the media to educate Nigerians about the dangers of environmental pollution, particularly noise pollution, is essential.
Addressing noise pollution in Ibadan is critical to improving public health, enhancing community safety, and maintaining social harmony. The government, along with relevant agencies and the public, must take collective action to curb this growing problem.
