Over the weekend, thousands of telecom subscribers found their lines barred despite having linked their lines with their National Identification Numbers (NIN). This unexpected issue led to an overwhelming influx of residents to telecom service providers’ offices in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, this morning, as they sought to resolve the problem and resume their normal activities. Dparrotnews captured the effects of this sudden disruption.

Earlier today, numerous telecom subscribers flocked to their service providers’ offices, voicing frustrations over their SIM cards being blocked over the weekend. This action came despite their compliance with the NIN linkage requirement. It is worth recalling that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had mandated all telecommunications operators to fully deactivate all SIMs that failed to submit their NIN by February 28, 2024, resulting in over 40 million subscribers’ lines being deactivated. Furthermore, customers who had submitted their NINs but remained unverified faced barring initially scheduled for April 15, 2024, which was later extended to July 31, 2024.

Amidst this turmoil, Nigerians are urging the NCC to intervene and ensure telecom service providers address the issue promptly. The public is calling for a swift resolution to restore communication services, especially during this critical period.
