The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has strongly condemned the recent Supreme Court judgment granting total financial autonomy to local governments in Nigeria. In a statement issued today by its leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, and National Public Secretary, Prince Justice Faloye, Afenifere described the ruling as a “judicial conspiracy.”
Afenifere expressed concerns over the implications of the judgment, suggesting that it undermines the principles of federalism. The group criticized the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of implementing policies that resemble a unitary system rather than true federalism.
“The Supreme Court’s judgment is a clear deviation from the principles of federalism. It is a judicial conspiracy that fails to recognize the importance of state oversight in local governance,” the statement read. “Since its inception, the Tinubu administration has shown a tendency towards a unitary system in some of its policies. This is not the path to sustainable development and democratic governance.”
Afenifere reiterated its stance that the only viable path forward for Nigeria is to embrace true federalism, where states retain significant control over local affairs.
The Supreme Court’s ruling, delivered on Thursday, declared it unconstitutional for state governors to control funds allocated to local government administrations. The court also ruled that state governments do not have the authority to appoint caretaker committees, emphasizing that local government councils should be led by democratically elected officials.
Afenifere’s statement highlights the ongoing debate over the balance of power between federal, state, and local governments in Nigeria. The group’s call for true federalism reflects broader concerns about governance and the need for decentralization to enhance accountability and efficiency at all levels of government.
