Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has expressed his preference for an indigenous coach to take charge of Nigeria’s national football team. This comes amidst ongoing discussions by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) about appointing a new head coach for the Super Eagles.

In June, the NFF announced its intention to hire a foreign expatriate to lead the three-time African champions. However, the recent attempt to appoint German coach Bruno Labbadia fell through, leaving the position still open. Despite this, Troost-Ekong has voiced his support for a local coach, believing that a Nigerian coach would better understand the dynamics, culture, and mentality of the players.

While Troost-Ekong is advocating for a homegrown coach to fill the role permanently, the NFF has appointed former Super Eagles international Augustine Eguavoen as the interim head coach. Eguavoen, who has previously managed the Super Eagles and served as the Technical Director of the NFF, will lead the team in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Troost-Ekong’s call for an indigenous coach reflects a growing sentiment among some players and football stakeholders in Nigeria who believe that local coaches are better positioned to connect with the team and bring out the best in the players. The captain’s support is seen as a push for continuity and the nurturing of local coaching talent.

Eguavoen’s appointment as interim coach offers a temporary solution while the NFF continues its search for a permanent head coach. With crucial AFCON qualifiers on the horizon, all eyes will be on Eguavoen to see if he can rally the Super Eagles and make a compelling case for a longer-term role or pave the way for another local talent to take the reins.

The debate over whether to hire a foreign or local coach has long been a contentious issue in Nigerian football, with arguments on both sides about the effectiveness, tactical knowledge, and understanding of the team culture. As the NFF navigates this decision, the input of influential players like Troost-Ekong could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Nigerian football leadership.
