A disturbing video has surfaced online, sparking widespread condemnation over the appalling feeding conditions at Presbyterian Senior Science School Ididep (PSSSI) in Akwa Ibom State.
The video, shared by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, shows students being served a meager and unappetizing meal consisting of watery soup and solid food.
Effiong, who verified the authenticity of the video, described the food as “not fit for prisoners or dogs.” He lamented the deplorable state of the school’s dining hall, likening it to a “concentration camp.”
The lawyer called on the Akwa Ibom State Government, particularly the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, and the Chairman of the State Secondary Education Board, Dr. Ekaette Ebong Okon, to intervene and address the situation immediately.
Nigerians on social media have joined Effiong in condemning the deplorable feeding conditions. @JournalistsAga3 described the situation as “very horrible, terrible & dehumanising,” while @GIbadin asked, “Does this actually mean we got demons in charge of governance in Nigeria?”
@flourish007 wrote, “Wait, are these people prisoners or students? Even condemned prisoners on death row shouldn’t be served food of this quality.” @realTobiAkinbo described the situation as “wickedness,” adding, “Prisoners and slaves even eat better food than this.”
@JoshLyffe commented, “Most of our Political Leaders today enjoyed good education in their school days but now every leader is known for looting funds meant for little things, imagine what they’re feeding people’s children with in the highest crude oil producing state.”
However, @BenjaminNworgu offered a different perspective, suggesting that the high cost of living in Nigeria might be responsible for the situation. “I will not blame the school management, food stuffs and cost of living is expensive in Nigeria, this is the reflection of it,” he said.
The incident has raised concerns about the welfare of students in public schools in Nigeria and the need for urgent attention to be paid to the quality of education and living conditions in these institutions.
