The Nigerian Senate leadership, headed by Godswill Akpabio, has been accused of snubbing the family of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South Senatorial District. According to sources, the Senate leadership failed to establish a committee to liaise with the family or the national burial committee, and did not provide any financial contributions to support the burial arrangements.
The late Senator Ubah, who died in London on July 27, was laid to rest on Friday in his hometown, Otolo Nnewi, in Anambra State. Despite the significance of the occasion, the Senate leadership was noticeably absent, with only nine Senators attending the burial, and only two of them from outside the South-East region.
Sources close to the family revealed that the Senate leadership did not contact the burial committee or the family to offer condolences or provide support during the preparation for the burial. Furthermore, no Senator spoke on behalf of the Nigerian Senate during the burial mass, which is a departure from tradition.
The Senate leadership’s actions have been widely criticized, with many viewing their behavior as a betrayal of their former colleague. The incident has raised questions about the leadership’s commitment to supporting its members, even in death.
Senator Ubah’s burial was attended by dignitaries, including the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi; Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia North; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; and Senator Victor Umeh of the Anambra Central district.
