Nigerian Married Men Face Mental Health Challenges Due to Lack of Spousal Support
A growing concern for the mental health of married men in Nigeria has been raised by Dr. Adeoye Oyewole, a psychiatrist at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso.
Dr. Oyewole attributes the mental health challenges faced by married men to the lack of support from their spouses, societal expectations, and financial pressures. He notes that many men are left to shoulder family responsibilities alone, leading to depression and passive suicidal tendencies.
“The societal and family expectations placed on men have led to silent suffering, with many men unable to express their struggles,” Dr. Oyewole explained. “The imbalance created by feminism has pushed men to the background, making it difficult for them to express themselves.”
Dr. Oyewole emphasized the importance of partnership and synergy between men and women, rather than combativeness. He also highlighted the need for fathers to be involved in their sons’ lives to promote responsibility and leadership.
Additionally, Dr. Oyewole addressed the financial pressures on men, stating that the narrative that men’s money belongs to everyone while women’s money belongs only to them is incorrect.
The article aims to raise awareness about the mental health challenges faced by married men in Nigeria and promote a more balanced and supportive relationship between men and women.
