In response to the recent cholera outbreak, the Nigerian Government has initiated discussions with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (Gavi) to secure emergency supplies of the oral cholera vaccine (OCV).

Dr. Jide Idris, Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), disclosed this in Abuja, emphasizing the urgent need for vaccination to combat the outbreak. The discussions are being led by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate.

The oral cholera vaccine, which consists of three types, requires two doses for full protection. These vaccines are typically administered to individuals and groups at high risk, such as travelers to regions with active cholera transmission and residents in areas currently experiencing outbreaks.

Dr. Idris highlighted the global surge in demand for cholera vaccines, which has resulted in a severe shortage. This shortage underscores the importance of timely discussions with Gavi to ensure that Nigeria receives the necessary vaccine supplies to mitigate the outbreak and protect vulnerable populations.

The government’s proactive steps in seeking international support reflect its commitment to addressing public health emergencies and safeguarding the health of its citizens.
