The Nigeria Police Force has stated that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, does not interfere in land cases or other civil matters. This clarification was made in response to recent allegations linking the IG to a land dispute.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, addressed the claims made against IG Egbetokun regarding a land dispute involving Bilikisu Aliyu and the Yesufu family. Adejobi firmly refuted these allegations, emphasizing that the police chief does not get involved in civil disputes.
Reacting to a media report suggesting that the IG had refused to investigate the land dispute case, Adejobi called on Nigerians to avoid implicating the police boss in matters outside his jurisdiction. “The claims made in the report are baseless and unfounded,” he asserted.
Adejobi stressed that the police only intervene in disputes when there are clear criminal elements involved. He explained, “The police force’s role is to ensure public safety and order, not to meddle in civil disputes unless they escalate into criminal activities.”
The Force PRO’s statement aims to dispel any misconceptions about the IG’s involvement in civil matters and to reiterate the police’s commitment to focusing on criminal issues within their purview. Adejobi’s remarks underscore the importance of understanding the delineation between civil and criminal cases in the context of police intervention.
