Finidi George has resigned as the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles following the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) announcement to appoint a foreign technical adviser. This decision by the NFF came amidst growing dissatisfaction with the team’s recent performances, notably a crucial defeat to Benin Republic that has left the Super Eagles struggling in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Finidi, who was unveiled as the head coach earlier this year, had signed a one-year contract with the NFF, which included the possibility of an extension. During his tenure, he led Nigeria in two international friendlies and served as an assistant coach under the previous head coach, Jose Peseiro.

The NFF’s move to seek foreign expertise underscores their commitment to revamping the team’s strategy and improving performance on the international stage. However, this decision also highlights the challenges faced by local coaches in securing long-term roles within the national team setup.

As the search for a new technical adviser begins, the NFF and fans alike will be keenly watching for improvements in the Super Eagles’ performance as they aim to secure a spot in the upcoming World Cup.
