In a significant enforcement operation, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down eight rice shops and a warehouse in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. These facilities were found to be involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit rice, leading to the seizure of over 1,600 bags valued at approximately ₦5 billion.

According to a statement released on NAFDAC’s official X account today, the operation, which also extended to Wuse and Garki markets in Abuja, was carried out on the directive of the agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye. The initiative aims to safeguard public health, particularly during the festive season when demand for food products is high.

The enforcement uncovered counterfeit rice repackaged in branded bags such as Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aroso, designed to deceive unsuspecting consumers. Additionally, empty rice bags bearing the names of well-known brands were discovered at the Karu facility, further highlighting the scale of the operation.

Speaking on the development, the Director in charge of NAFDAC’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) office, Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, issued a stern warning to counterfeiters, urging them to desist from such illicit practices or face legal consequences. He confirmed that suspects apprehended during the raid would be prosecuted to set an example and deter future offenders.

While the operation has been widely commended online for its decisive approach, some criticism has emerged regarding the absence of arrests so far. NAFDAC has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that those involved in the counterfeiting ring will be held accountable.

The agency also called on consumers to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and verify the authenticity of food products before purchase, as part of a collective effort to combat the menace of counterfeit goods.
