NAFDAC Uncovers Warehouse of Unregistered and Expired Products in Lagos

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a warehouse in Oke-Afa, Okota, Lagos State, containing large quantities of unregistered and expired supermarket items. This development was announced via NAFDAC’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, November 21, 2024, through Public Alert No. 042/2024. The alert also highlighted the recall of 45,000 units of Ryaltris Nasal Spray manufactured by Glenmark Pharmaceutical Inc.

The raid followed actionable intelligence that led NAFDAC enforcement officials to the facility, where operators were found offloading a 20-foot container filled with unregistered carbonated drinks. Upon further inspection, the team discovered over 14 storage rooms packed with unregistered and expired products.

Disturbingly, some of the items showed signs of contamination, including evidence of rat infestations, indicating extremely poor storage conditions. These violations pose significant health risks to unsuspecting consumers.

NAFDAC has placed the warehouse under hold and suspended all operations at the facility pending a full investigation. The agency has summoned the facility’s management to provide documentation on the source of the products, including the Global Listing for Supermarket Items (GLSI) certificate.

The agency emphasized its commitment to ensuring that only safe and quality products are available to consumers, especially as the festive season approaches, a period marked by high consumer activity and increased demand.

NAFDAC has warned the public about the dangers of unregistered and expired products and urged consumers to remain vigilant by:

  • Verifying product registration numbers through NAFDAC’s official platforms.
  • Checking product expiry dates and storage conditions before purchase.
  • Reporting any suspicious activities or products to the nearest NAFDAC office.

The discovery underscores NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on the distribution of substandard and unregistered goods, which undermine public health and safety. The agency continues to strengthen its enforcement and monitoring mechanisms while calling for public cooperation in reporting non-compliant operators.

NAFDAC’s actions align with its mission to protect public health and ensure regulatory compliance across the nation’s food and drug supply chain.
