NAFDAC has intensified enforcement of its ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sizes below 200ml, focusing on major distributors at the Rumuokoro Market in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
During a recent operation, officials uncovered hundreds of cartons of alcohol packaged in sachets and PET bottles across two shops. However, attempts to evacuate the products were met with resistance from traders, prompting NAFDAC to place the items on HOLD.
The ban, which came into effect in February 2024, follows a five-year grace period granted to manufacturers in 2018 to phase out production of these products. This was disclosed in a statement published on the agency’s official X account on December 7, 2024.
Developed in collaboration with stakeholders, the federal directive aims to protect public health, particularly among young Nigerians. NAFDAC has reiterated its commitment to removing banned products from markets, supermarkets, and street vendors nationwide.
Manufacturers who continue producing these prohibited beverages face severe penalties, as the agency remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard public safety.
