The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has refuted claims of approving a herbal tea allegedly marketed to promote smoking. The agency clarified that the product, known as Lung Detox Tea, Lungitox (Smokers’ Pride), or any similar variant, is not registered with NAFDAC.
In a formal statement, NAFDAC emphasized that herbal products, or any related substances, are prohibited from making therapeutic claims unless such claims are scientifically validated through rigorous clinical trials. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring public health and safety, stating unequivocally that it does not and will not authorize the importation, manufacture, exportation, advertisement, distribution, sale, or use of any product making unsubstantiated claims.
NAFDAC underscored its role as a science-driven regulatory body, dedicated to protecting consumers from unsafe or misleading products. The agency called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious claims or products to the appropriate authorities.
The Agency wrote on their official X account:
NAFDAC Refutes Claims of Approving Herbal Tea Promoting Smoking.
The product in question—Lung Detox Tea or Lungitox (Smokers Pride) or any similar product—is NOT registered by NAFDAC.
Herbal Products and any other related products are not allowed to make any therapeutic claims unless scientifically validated through proper clinical trial studies.
As a scientific and professional agency, NAFDAC will never permit the importation, exportation, manufacture, advertisement, distribution, sale, and use of products with claims that do not have any scientific basis.
