In a major breakthrough, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has busted a large-scale counterfeit beverage operation at the Lagos Trade Fair Complex. The agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate uncovered the illicit activity, which involved the revalidation of expired alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for resale.
During the raid, NAFDAC officials caught two individuals in the act of removing expired beverage labels and replacing them with falsified date markings. The agency seized newly printed labels, date-marking tools, and discarded expired labels from the premises.
The entire premises was sealed, and the counterfeit products were confiscated. The store owner, identified as the main suspect, was arrested and taken into custody for further investigation.
This crackdown serves as a warning to unscrupulous individuals and businesses engaging in counterfeit activities. NAFDAC urges consumers to exercise extreme caution when purchasing beverages, especially during the festive season.
To protect themselves, consumers are advised to:
– Check the expiration dates and packaging of beverages before purchase
– Be wary of unusually low prices or unfamiliar brands
– Report suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office
NAFDAC remains committed to protecting the health and well-being of Nigerians by ensuring the safety and quality of food and beverages in the market.
