A horrific incident occurred in Onitsha, Anambra State, where an angry mob set ablaze two revenue collectors employed by the state government. The violent reaction was sparked by the revenue collectors’ alleged role in causing a tipper driver to lose control of his vehicle, resulting in the death of a bystander.
According to eyewitnesses, the revenue collectors were chasing the tipper driver over a payment dispute when they began dragging the vehicle’s steering wheel. This reckless behavior led to the driver losing control, ramming into a passerby, and killing them instantly.
The mob’s anger was further fueled by the revenue collectors’ attempt to flee the scene. In the ensuing chaos, two revenue collectors were set ablaze, while four others managed to escape.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident, with spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga stating that the police are working with relevant authorities to investigate the incident and prevent similar occurrences in the future.¹
