Makinde Reaffirms Commitment to Justice Over Children’s Funfair Tragedy

Governor Seyi Makinde has reiterated his dedication to ensuring justice is served in response to the tragic loss of 35 children during a recent stampede at a children’s funfair in Oyo State.

Makinde’s commitment comes after a devastating incident at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, where 35 children lost their lives due to a stampede caused by inadequate security and poor event planning. The governor had previously postponed his birthday celebrations to honor the victims.

Speaking at the Annual Inter-Faith Service held at the Oyo State House of Assembly, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, the governor expressed his unwavering belief in the integrity of the Oyo State judicial system. He assured the public that the case would be thoroughly investigated and handled with due diligence, without regard to the social status of any individuals involved.

The governor also announced plans to swear in newly appointed permanent secretaries on Monday, January 13, commending the Oyo State civil servants for their collaborative efforts in supporting the government’s vision for development and progress.

The Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, in her address at the event, acknowledged Governor Makinde’s steadfast commitment to the welfare of Oyo State workers. She highlighted achievements including salary increases, promotions, and worker-friendly policies that have significantly improved the civil service. She further encouraged civil and public servants to maintain dedication and uphold ethical practices in their duties.

Representing the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, the Deputy Speaker called on workers to continue demonstrating positive attitudes and professionalism in reciprocation for the governor’s good gestures toward the workforce.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Oyo State jointly expressed their profound gratitude to Governor Makinde. They lauded his administration for implementing the new minimum wage, recruiting 15,000 additional civil servants, and fostering an enabling environment that allows workers to thrive professionally.
