Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his commitment to fostering a strong partnership with the Nigerian Army to combat criminality and ensure lasting peace in the state.
Governor Makinde made this pledge during a special Jumat service held at the Central Mosque, Ojaba, as part of the 2025 Nigerian Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebrations. The event commemorated the sacrifices of the nation’s fallen heroes.
Represented by his Deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, the Governor led a delegation of Muslim faithful in government to the service, which included Commissioners, Local Government Chairmen, political appointees, and military officers.
After observing the obligatory Jumat prayers, the Chief Imam of Ìbàdànland, Sheikh Abdulganiy Agbotomokekere, led other worshippers in offering special prayers for the repose of the souls of the nation’s fallen heroes, as well as for peace and progress in the state and country at large.
In his address, Barrister Bayo Lawal emphasized the historical significance of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, acknowledging the military’s pivotal role in preserving Nigeria’s unity. He noted that Governor Makinde’s administration remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting security agencies for enhanced stability and development in the state.
Also speaking at the event, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Nigerian Army Ibadan, Major General Obinna Onubogu, represented by Brigadier General Haruna Ibrahim, expressed gratitude for the Makinde administration’s consistent support of the military and other security agencies. He pledged that the Nigerian Army would continue to prioritize peace and order in the state.
Earlier, Sheikh Abdulganiy Agbotomokekere, in his sermon drawn from Quran 2:251, highlighted the military’s efforts in safeguarding national sovereignty. He also praised Governor Makinde for his accomplishments, including promoting peace and development in Oyo State. The Chief Imam quoted the Prophet Muhammad’s teaching on humanity’s greatest battles against disunity and evil, urging prayers for a society free of social vices.
The service marked another significant moment in the lineup of events celebrating the contributions and sacrifices of Nigeria’s Armed Forces.
