The Magistrates in Cross River State have announced an indefinite strike, citing unresolved welfare issues.
In a statement released, Godwin Onah, the Chairman of the Magistrate Association of Nigeria (Cross River chapter), and Solomon Abuo, the Secretary, confirmed the strike would begin on Monday, 9th December 2024.
The magistrates said, “We are hereby embarking on an indefinite strike action from Monday, 9th of December 2024 till our demands are met.”
They added that all magistrates must abstain from court sittings and other official duties.
The association accused the state government of failing to negotiate with them, despite several notices. “The government has not taken any steps to negotiate with us,” the statement said.
Earlier, on November 5, the magistrates submitted eight demands to the state government, including the implementation of promotions, payment of financial benefits, N200,000 monthly imprest, robing allowance, and clearing of two years’ salary arrears for the 2019 batch.
Other demands include official accommodation, vehicles, and renovation of dilapidated court buildings.
A three-day warning strike had been held after the government ignored a seven-day ultimatum.
Magistrates across the state are expected to comply strictly with the strike directive.
