The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released Barrister Phillip Ojo, a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ibadan branch, who was detained earlier. Ojo was held alongside a bailiff from the Oyo State High Court while attempting to serve court papers to the EFCC.
The court bailiff was released after complying with the EFCC’s request to write a statement. However, Barrister Ojo reportedly refused to write a statement, leading to his extended detention.
In response to Ojo’s detention, the Ibadan branch of the NBA organized a peaceful protest early today. The protest, led by the branch chairman, Ibrahim Lawal, culminated at the EFCC’s zonal office in Iyaganku, Ibadan. Following the protest, Barrister Ojo was released by the EFCC.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between legal practitioners and the EFCC, raising concerns within the legal community about the treatment of lawyers while performing their duties.
