Lassa Fever Outbreak Intensifies in Nigeria: NCDC Reports Surge in Cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported a significant increase in Lassa fever cases in week 39 of 2024. According to the latest Lassa Fever Situation Report, nine new confirmed cases were recorded in Ondo and Edo states, marking a substantial rise from the four cases reported in the previous week.

As of the latest report, the total number of Lassa fever infections has climbed to 1,018, with 172 deaths recorded across 28 states. This upward

Ondo and Edo states remain hotspots for Lassa fever transmission, accounting for the majority of confirmed cases. Other states have also reported cases, emphasizing the importance of nationwide awareness and prevention efforts.

Lassa Fever Facts

Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus. The disease is primarily transmitted through:

1. Contact with contaminated food or household items
2. Infected individuals
3. Rodent carriers’ urine or feces

Common symptoms include:

1. Fever
2. Headache
3. Sore throat
4. General body weakness
5. Cough
6. Nausea
7. Vomiting
8. Diarrhea
9. Muscle pains
10. Chest pain
11. In severe cases, unexplained bleeding from ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and other body openings

 

Prevention Measures To curb the spread of Lassa fever:

1. Avoid contact with contaminated items
2. Eliminate rats within households
3. Exercise caution when consuming food items that may have been exposed to rats
4. Maintain good hygiene practices

Response Efforts

The NCDC has activated the National Lassa Fever Multi-Partner, Multi-Sectoral Incident Management System to coordinate response efforts at all levels of the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC). This comprehensive approach aims to:

1. Enhance surveillance and detection
2. Strengthen contact tracing
3. Improve case management
4. Intensify public awareness campaigns
