The G20 Summit is an annual gathering of leaders from 19 countries and the European Union, representing the world’s largest economies. It focuses on addressing key global issues such as economic growth, international trade, climate change, and sustainable development. The summit provides a platform for collaboration between developed and emerging economies, aiming to tackle global challenges that no single nation can solve alone. Discussions often center on promoting financial stability, reducing poverty and inequality, and advancing global cooperation to address crises like climate change. The G20 helps coordinate policy measures to create a more inclusive and stable global economy
At the 2024 G20 Summit in Brazil, President Bola Tinubu made significant contributions to global discussions on poverty and hunger. He strongly endorsed the creation of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative championed by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Tinubu emphasized that this alliance is crucial for tackling one of the world’s most pressing issues, particularly through collaboration between governments, civil society, and international organizations.
Additionally, Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in eradicating hunger and poverty, aligning with his administration’s domestic policies on agriculture and social investment. He reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to work with international partners to address structural causes of hunger and promote sustainable development.
In his address, President Tinubu also called for reform of the United Nations Security Council to ensure it better represents global diversity and Africa’s interests. He underscored the importance of global financial reforms, particularly in taxation, to promote a fairer system for the developing world.
