A major fire outbreak has engulfed a section of the Dangote Refinery located in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State. Explosions were reported on Wednesday as the fire spread through the facility.
As of the time of this report, the Dangote Group has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
The Dangote Refinery, a $19 billion project, was established by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote. He had previously revealed that he faced significant opposition from both local and international interests in the oil sector. According to Dangote, these groups, whom he described as being more powerful than drug cartels, attempted to sabotage the refinery project. He shared these insights at the Afreximbank annual meeting and AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum in the Bahamas, noting that the resistance he encountered was unexpectedly severe.
Firefighters have arrived at the scene to combat the blaze. Amid the chaos, a worker was overheard shouting, “Gas Plenty,” highlighting the dangerous conditions at the site.
The situation is still developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
