The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of Moses Lohor, Head of the Osun State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad, and his team over the alleged shooting of Wakeel Nurudeen Iyanda Alowonle, Chairman of the Osun State Transport Management System (OSTMS).
The incident reportedly took place on Monday night during a confrontation at the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, which escalated into violence. Alowonle was allegedly shot in the abdomen by Lohor while in police custody following his arrest over a domestic dispute.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Security, Samuel Ojo.
According to the statement, “Moses Lohor shot Alowonle in the abdomen at the police station after his arrest over a domestic brawl with a neighbour. The park chairman is currently on life support at the Intensive Care Unit of the Osun State Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.”
The Governor condemned the incident as a violation of professional ethics, describing Lohor’s actions as “unprofessional, illegal, and contrary to operational codes of conduct.”
Ojo confirmed that Lohor and his team have been transferred to Abuja for further investigation and disciplinary action. He praised the swift response of the police hierarchy to the incident.
“We can confirm that the police authorities at the highest level have acted decisively on this matter. A clear punitive directive was issued by the IG. Mr. Governor has directed us to follow up to ensure that justice is served,” Ojo stated.
The shooting has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for accountability and reforms in law enforcement practices. Stakeholders have demanded that the investigation be thorough and transparent to restore public confidence in the police force.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers and the need for improved adherence to operational guidelines.
